DNA CLUB – A BRIEF PROFILE OF ACTIVITIES OBJECTIVE OF DNA CLUBS:
DETAILS OF ACTIVITIES The activities under the DNA clubs are proposed to be a unique mix in school, out of school activities as well as interaction with eminent person engaged one way of the other with Bio-resources and Bio-technology. The activities can be broadly divided under the Following main components:
1. TEACHER ORIENTATION/TRAINING PROGRAMS One program will be conducted annually wherein two teachers from each participant school will attend an orientation cum training program on the various activities proposed to be undertaken by DNA Clubs. Apart from interaction with invited experts in the field of biodiversity, bioresearches and environment, opportunity will be provided for hands on experience in basic experiments in biotechnology and use of innovative methods of teaching such as demonstration, lab experiments, field trips and quiz competitions. 2. IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES In school activities will comprise of a judicious mix of experiments and making models Centered on biotech themes. The experiments/models will be divided into suitable Categories to appeal to students of various age-groups. The board details on in school lab Activities planed and equipment consumables required for the same is given below: Experiments: To engage the interest of students and stimulate critical thinking, experiments will go beyond the standard laboratory experiments conducted in school. They will addressed in question format (enquiry based experiments) and will deal with food items, hygiene and body functions which children find easy to identify with. Indicative list of models:
Basic Laboratory Equipment:
3. FIELD TRIPS Three field trips will be organized by each school DNA club to places in and around the region which have demonstrational potential for highlighting the linkages between bio-Resources (and conservation there of ), biotechnology and human welfare. Specific sites Would be selected by each cluster school inosculation with TREE and the same will be built into an annual DNA Club Event calendar. For junior school student (class 6-8) the visits could be arranged to nation parks, zoological parks, neighborhood forests, botanical gardens, etc, whereas senior students (class 9-12) would visit pharmaceutical companies and effluent treatment plants, etc. 4. GUEST LECTURES (by eminent scientists/practitioners) Four guest lectures will be organized each year in one school. Two of these will be organized by the RRA directly while other two will be decided and organized directly by the participant school in consultations with RRA. 5. VISIT TO PREMIER SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTIONS Three visits will be organized by each DNA club for its members to institutions of eminence involved in the field of Biotechnology, Bio-resources and their conservation and sustainable management. Selection of these institutions and the schedule of visits will be done in consultation of the school, CC and the RRA and will take into account factors such as proximately and accessibility. 6. IN-SCHOOL SPECIAL PROJECTS An indicative list of activities which the school could take up is given below:

Annual DNA FEST A DNA-FEST will be held in each state to provide a chance for participants of all DNA clubs to assemble and showcase their efforts/ experiences for wider appreciation. DNA club will be include an exhibitions, guest lecturer, a quiz contest ,an interactive discussion and a cultural evening for assembled of DNA clubs to participate in/benefit from . To give the DNA-FEST a wider appeal, a few students/teachers from schools in the vicinity of the lead school also be invited to the exhibition and other activities as per availability of space/resources . 9. VACATION PROGRAM ON BIO-RESOURCES A Vacation program on bio-resources will be conducted in each state Three Students from each DNA Club of the ten schools will be selected for the 4 week summer vacation program on bio-resources on the basis of a written test organized by the RRA. The PBR’s will be conducted by an institution chosen in consultation with DBT officials. As an RRA, ATREE will work with agencies given the task of conducting VPBR s to provide necessary expertise regarding content of structure of such programs .
